Rama wants probe on MCWD diggings

CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama wants an investigation into the excavation works done along the Talamban, Pitos and Bacayan road in the north district by a contractor of the Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD).

Rama expressed displeasure on the destruction of newly asphalted roads in the three barangays.

“I want them to answer legally because they cannot be doing an invasion. They cannot just be cutting the asphalt,” he said.

Charmaine Rodriguez, MCWD information officer, said the diggings in barangays Talamban, Pit-os and Bacayan is part of their P54 million pipe installation project to pump MCWD water into the three barangays.

The project started in October 2012 yet and was supposed to be completed in February 2013. But it was suspended on Jan. 16 after the City Council passed an resolution by councilor Edgar Labella asking MCWD to restore the damaged roads.

Rodriguez said MCWD contractor New Culion Builders, opted to stop the pipe installation project and restore the roads.

They already cemented a portion of the road from Villa del Rio to Villa Leyson. But the road was not immediately asphalted to raise it to ground level because of delays in the contractor’s asphalt purchase.

They were told that the asphalt supply is now scarce because of the many ongoing road improvement projects.

Since there are several other pipes buried on the sidewalks, their contractor did their diggings in the middle portion of the road to bury their 300mm pipes measuring 219 meters. Chief of Reporters Doris C. Bongcac
