MANILA, Philippines –The Philippine National Police (PNP)   has raised its alert level in parts of the country for the Holy Week, its spokesman said Monday.

Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr. said PNP units in Luzon and Visayas, including the National Support Units, have geared up to heightened alert at 5 p.m. Sunday in line with PNP’s security preparations for the Lenten season.

In Mindanao, Cerbo said, police units, including the Special Action Force remained at full alert.

Police Director Alex Paul Monteagudo, PNP’s director for Operations, earlier said part of PNP’s security preparation for the Lenten season was the establishment of Police Assistance

Desks/Centers, and the deployment of Road Safety Marshalls in convergence points particularly in bus terminals, airports, seaports, train stations, recreational areas including highways, main thoroughfares and crime prone areas to ensure maximum police presence.

“PNP personnel who are deployed at convergence points and Police Assistance Desks are assigned to assist the general public. However, the mandatory police operations against criminal elements and dissident terrorists should not be overlooked,”  Monteagudo said.
