MANILA, Philippines — A 47-year-old man was shot dead inside his home by an unknown assailant early Sunday, in Manila.
Leonardo Duno of C. Planas Street, Barangay (village) 3 Zone 1 in Tondo was sleeping on the ground floor of his house when the gunman barged into his home and started firing at him.
Duno was declared dead on arrival by attending doctors of the Mary Johnston Hospital from multiple bullet wounds in the head and body.
Senior Police Officer 3 Glenzor Vallejo, of the Manila Police District (MPD) homicide section, said that the killing happened at around 1 a.m. on Sunday.
The gun-wielding man, he said, barged into the house and found Duno, who usually slept on a folding bed on the ground floor. The gunman repeatedly shot the slumbering Duno before fleeing on a motorcycle driven by a cohort.
The case investigator said that the shots roused Duno’s nephew, Fritz Examien, who was then sleeping in his bedroom on the second floor. When Examien descended the stairs, he found his uncle covered in blood lying on the folding bed. He immediately sought the help of neighbors in bringing the badly wounded victim to the nearest hospital but the effort proved futile.
Vallejo said that Duno sustained bullet wounds in the face, his forearm and other parts of his body. Recovered at the crime scene were four .45 pistol bullet casings.
According to the case investigator, the motive behind the attack remains under probe.
