7 Cebu teams make q’terfinal cut in Nestea beach volley tilt

Moalboal, Cebu – Seven Cebuano teams: four in the men’s division and three in the distaff side advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 16th Nestea Beach Volley 2013 VISMIN leg which commenced yesterday in Bas Dako, Moalboal.

The Cebuano quarterfinals cast is led by national defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) manned by Jade Becaldo and Mike Abria who advanced via a, 21-13, 21-15 victory over University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF)-B of John Michael Ylanan and Gwen Kevenrick Ausen.

The UV duo coached by Raffy Briones cruised in the first set erecting a nine-point lead, 20-11. USPF-B managed to make it close in the early goings of the second set and even tied the score at 5-all. But the UV pair showed why they are the national champions by outscoring their foes, 16-10 for the easy win.

UV will next face archrival Southwestern University (SWU) in the quarters after the SWU pair of Romel Pepito and Relan Taneo outlasted regional defending champions University of St. La Salle, 21-17, 21-16.

SWU is the reigning Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. and Private Schools Athletic Association regional and national champions.

The other two Cebu teams which grabbed quarterfinal tickets are the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R)-A and USPF-A.

The USJR-A pair of Jade Illut and Jason Uy survived fellow Cebuano team University of San Carlos (USC) in three sets, 21-11, 15-21, 15-6 and will next face Foundation University (FU)-B which kicked out John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University-Iloilo, 21-6, 21-7.

USPF-A, manned by Edmar Bonono and Edward Ybanez, marched to the Last 8 via a 21-9, 25-23 win over University of Cebu (UC)-A. Next up for USPF-A is Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) which downed University of Bohol, 21-11, 21-14.

WOMEN’S WINNERS

Making the quarterfinal round in the distaff side are USC-B, SWU and USPF-A.

The USC-B tandem of Anna Krist Capinpin and Exel Ignacio humbled USJ-R B, 21-11, 21-17 to arrange a tough quarterfinal battle against defending champions Central Philippine University (CPU), which rapped Iligan Medical Center College (IMCC), 21-8, 21-8.

The SWU pair of Danika Yolanda Gendrauli and Raphril Aguilar also cruised to the quarterfinals with a 21-9, 21-12 win over USPF-B. They will next face Mindanao State University (MSU) which busted Bohol Institute of Technology (BIT)-B, 21-14, 21-14.

The last Cebuano quarterfinalist is USPF-A manned by Rochelle Rica and Apple Saraum which survived BIT-A, 21-17, 18-21, 15-9. They will next play University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) which outlasted UC-A.
