The Lapu-Lapu City government kicked off the celebration of Women’s Month with various activities last March 8 in Olango Island, including free livelihood training, food trade, Zumbayen-an and symposium on waste management.
Hundreds of residents, composed of women, attended the whole-day activity headed by Lapu-Lapu City Livelihood and Resource Center head Jimmy Glomar and technical staff Nica Bertulfo.
Glomar said most of the activities were focused on poverty alleviation program. “Sagad man gud sa mga inahan walay mga trabaho, mao nga nag-andam mi niining livelihood training aron sila maka-kwarta (Most of the mothers (in Olango) are jobless, that’s why we came up with this livelihood training for them to earn money),” Glomar said.
There was also the food trade wherein food products produced by the participants in the livelihood training were displayed for sale.
Obese and weight-conscious women also joined the “Zumbayen-an,” a Zumba dance exercise led by expert gym instructors.
The participants also learned how to convert garbage into fertilizer after joining the symposium on solid waste management.
“Ang pagpananom daku sab kaayo og ikatabang aron maminusan ang gasto sa pagpalit og pagka-on (Gardening helps lower food cost),” Glomar said.
Today, all these activities will also be held at the Lapu-Lapu city hall grounds.
Another activity will be the beauty and brain pageant for the Kababayen-ang Oponganon Nagkahiusa alang sa Kalambuan (Konka) on March 16 at 2 p.m. at the Hoops Dome. Admission is free.
Twenty Konka members, aged 30 and above, from the different barangays in the city will join the pageant.
The Konka cooperative has a total of 1,411 women members.
It has a store in front of the Lapu-Lapu City hospital that sells cakes and pastries. /CORRESPONDENT NORMAN V. MENDOZA
