Brain cancer monitor apparatus set up at VSMMC

A NEW apparatus that can detect brain tumors is now installed at the  Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Wyben Briones said the Curve Brain Laboratory Apparatus was used in a successful operation done last Thursday on a 45-year-old indigent female brain cancer patient in Cebu.

“Paspas ni siya ug mas dali ra ma kita ang tumor ug asa i posisyon dayon ang pag opera kay naa man ang iyang LCD screen makita ang tumor (The operation is fast and easy because one can see the tumor and decide what position on the brain to operate on. There’s an LCD monitor where one can see the tumor),” he told Cebu Daily News

The woman’s brain tumor measured 3×3 cm or about the size of a golf ball, Dr. Briones disclosed.

From three to four hours, Dr. Briones said the operation lasted one and a half hours with the use of the apparatus.

The apparatus is said to be the first in the country and the second used in Asia, Dr. Briones told reporters.

“We are lucky to have this kind of technology that will help us to save time and lives of a brain cancer patient,” he said. Correspondent Renan Alangilan
