Motorist ignores ‘no entry’ sign, rams truck

A 25-year-old security guard was killed when he drove through a “no entry” sign and ran smack into a dump truck parked on a portion of the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge where road repair work is ongoing.

Ignacio Lamac of Tactical Security Agency suffered head injuries. The victim, a resident of barangay Carreta, Cebu City, was declared dead at the Mandaue City Hospital.

Franklin Luardo, 32, driver of the truck, said he parked the truck while he was waiting for his turn to unload asphalt at dawn yesterday.

The truck with plate number YCT-835 is owned by GTM Builders.

A no entry sign was placed in the area to warn motorists and a worker of PLD Contractor was assigned to man the traffic on the Mandaue-bound lane.

Police said the worker tasked to man the traffic tried to stop Lamac, who was driving a motorcycle, to warn him that that he was entering a “no entry” lane.

SPO2 Eduardo Flores, traffic investigator of the Mandaue police, said Lamac and another motorcycle ignored the worker who tried to flag them down.

Shortly after getting past the sign, Lamac’s motorcycle slammed into the rear portion of the truck in a downhill portion of the bridge. The other motorcycle was able to get through, police said.

Paramedics rushed Lamac to the hospital. Police said there were skid marks on the road, indicating that Lamac tried to apply the brakes to avoid ramming the truck.

Police detained Luardo after the accident and could be charged if the victim’s family decides to press charges against him./CORRESPONDENT NORMAN V. MENDOZA
