Probe tunnel leak

CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama has directed the City Engineer’s Office to investigate reports of water dripping from the walls of the South Coastal Road tunnel especially when it rains.

The mayor however, said it would still be best if the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will be the one to send their engineers to check on the tunnel’s condition.

“Somebody nga kaila nako told me of the leak. Ug naa kunoy uwan water would drip from the walls of the tunnel,” he said.

Rama said they will not wait for an accident to happen.

He said that even with minimal rain at this time of the year, water stains on the tunnel’s wall are visible, confirming reports of the water leak.

The mayor said that he will ask Engr. Ariel dela Cruz, the city’s civil engineer, to inspect the tunnel. He has likewise directed Rafael Yap, head of the City Integrated Traffic Operations Management (Citom) to coordinate with City Administrator Jose Marie Poblete and SRP management officer-in-charge Roberto “Bo” Varquez to sit down and prepare a traffic management plan for the South Road Properties which uses the South Coastal Road as its main access road should the tunnel requires closure for repairs. /Chief Of Reporters Doris C.
