ILOILO CITY, Philippines—Nineteen persons were injured, including a man who lost his right leg, when a public utility van whose driver had fallen asleep, collided with a jeepney in the town of Alimodian in Iloilo province on Monday afternoon, police said.
Raffy Teodoro, 33, had his right leg severed and the other leg broken because of the accident, which happened around 4 p.m. Monday in Alimodian, 23 km northwest of Iloilo City.
Teodoro was still confined at the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao district in Iloilo City while 18 others who sustained minor injuries were discharged after treatment.
Rodolfo Montinola, the driver of the van, admitted that he fell asleep while driving from Iloilo City to Leon town and his vehicle rammed a jeepney that was picking up a passenger.
The van had 14 passengers, including Teodoro who was sitting on the front seat, while the jeepney had five.
Chief Insp. Bonifacio Ancaja, Alimodian police chief, said Montinola, who sustained minor injuries, was detained and would be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in serious physical injury and serious multiple injuries.
