THE Provincial Board (PB) approved a resolution inviting the Environmental Management Bureau in Central Visayas (EMB-7) to shed light on the Korean Electric Power Corp. (Kepco) coal plant’s operations in next week’s session.
The board said it wanted to know Kepco’s compliance with the requirements involving the proper disposal of coal ash.
“The appraisal of EMB will provide the board with the needed information that will serve as basis for review of the contractual arrangement between the Provincial Government of Cebu and KEPCO,” the resolution said.
“The review will ensure the health and safety of the residents of the City of Naga,” it added.
A copy of the resolution is to be furnished to EMB 7.
Kepco signed an agreement with the firm Cemex Phils. which allows them to buy the coal ash for their use.
The province will collect a share from Cemex on an amount agreed upon between them.
A coal ash facility being planned for construction by Kepco at the controversial Balili property is tied up in the courts following a complaint filed by ecology groups. Correspondent Carmel Loise Matus
