2 Pacific quakes near Russia cause no damage

MOSCOW— Russian officials say a 5.9- magnitude earthquake and a successive temblor in the Pacific off Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula have caused no casualties or damage.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said the epicenter of Friday’s first quake was located about 250 kilometers (135 nautical miles) east of the coastal city of Vilyuchinsk at a depth of 50 kilometers (27 miles). It was felt as a magnitude 4 temblor in the provincial capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy and nearby areas. The ministry said the second quake in the same area had a magnitude of 5.

The U.S. Geological Survey had different measurements, saying the first quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.5, and a second measured 6.7

Friday’s quakes followed a magnitude 6.3 temblor off Kamchatka’s shores that also has caused no damage.
