Cebuano talents recognized during close of Arts and Culture Month

A month-long showcase of Cebuano talent closed yesterday at the Cebu Cultural Arts Center with praise for the unique identity of local music and the visual arts.

Provincial Board Member Antonio Magpale lauded the “bisrock” (Bisaya rock) theme of this year’s Cebu Arts and Culture Month for raising the consciousness of young Cebuanos.

“Mas sadya ug nalingaw ang tanan ilabi na ang mga kabatan-onan sa mga bisrock kay maka relate man gud ta sa kanta ug makasabot ta sa mensahe niini. Gani ang bisrock karon naapil na sa playlist sa mga AM stations gumikan kay mas ‘in’ siya sa mga Cebuanos,” said Magpale, who is in his mid30s.

(It’s more fun especially for the youth who can relate with ‘bisrock’. We can relate with the music and understand better the message of the songs. Bisrock is even included now in the playlist of radio stations because it’s the ‘in’ thing for young Cebuanos.)

Provincial Board Member Arleigh Sitoy, in his speech, encouraged Cebuanos to love one’s own culture because it speaks of “who we are, and where we came from”.

February is designated arts and culture month.

Art exhibits by Cebuano painters and craftsmen were also rolled out during the month-long celebration in Museo sa Sugbo, the Cebu provincial museum.
