Speeding. Overtaking a bigger vehicle. Running counterflow.

These risky moves by a tricycle driver reportedly caused his vehicle to collide with a six-wheel truck on Kamias Road, Quezon City, around 2 a.m. Thursday, leaving him and his female passenger severely injured.

The Quezon City Police District’s Traffic Sector 3 said Carlo Datalio, 20, and Kimberly Balenzogan, 16, remained in critical condition at East Avenue Medical Center following the incident. Romeo Gutierrez, the driver of the truck marked “MBT Gravel & Sand,” surrendered to authorities.

Footage from a security camera installed on one of the establishments along Kamias showed that the tricycle tried to overtake a jeepney and took up a lane in the opposite direction, where it was hit by the truck near the corner of Kasing-kasing street.

The impact was so strong that it tore the sidecar from the motorbike.

Datalio and Balenzogan, along with parts of the bike, ended up pinned right under the truck.

For about half an hour they bled and could not move. Rescuers had to use special equipment to lift the truck before their bodies were pulled loose.
