MANILA, Philippines – “Please don’t hit my father,” Nancy Binay said on Wednesday as she anticipated an intensified attack against her dad, Vice President Jejomar Binay, to bring her down in the surveys.
While thankful for her strong showing in the latest Social Weather Station (SWS) survey, the young Binay said she was wary that political operators would “escalate” their attacks on her father just to get her.
Nancy Binay, who is running under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), ranked 7th in the SWS survey conducted from February 15 to 17.
“I hope they will just allow us to talk to the people about issues. Please don’t hit my father just to bring me down in the surveys. Sana itigil na nila ang mga paninira sa aming magulang dahil hindi naman sila ang kandidato,” she said in a statement.
“Bilang anak, nasasaktan ako sa ginagawa nila sa aking ama,” said Binay’s eldest daughter.
She noted that the attacks against her father, who has the highest trust and approval rating among government officials, have escalated after her inclusion in the senatorial ticket of UNA.
Binay heads UNA along with former President Joseph Estrada and Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile.
The two, Nancy said, were also being attacked by political enemies just to bring down the ratings of UNA candidates.
Despite her good showing in the surveys, the young Binay acknowledged that “much work remains to be done.”
“I am very grateful for the support. For me personally, the surveys serve as a guide for planning,” she said.
“The true test of support for a candidate is the turnout and the reception given to us during our sorties to the provinces. And so far, UNA has garnered large crowds wherever we go, despite the warning given to local officials not to host us when we visit,” she added.
