POLITICS EYED IN TOLEDO KILLING

FORMER senator John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña asked the police to thoroughly investigate the killing of his bodyguard in Toledo City, southwest Cebu.

Osmeña,   a mayoral candidate for Toledo in the May election, provided information which suggests that the killing of Rene Embranilag was politically motivated, Chief Supt. Marcelo Garbo, director of the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7), said.

Garbo said Osmeña visited him last week to discuss the case.

Embralinag, 42, was shot dead while driving home last week in barangay Luray 2, Toledo.

Garbo said Osmeña had possible suspects whose identities matched with the persons that the police are monitoring.

Based on the way the crime was carried out, the two motorcycle-riding assailants were guns-for-hire.

Aside from politics, Garbo said investigators are pursuing other possible motives.

Police said Embranilag was an informant of the police and the military and had reported to authorities about the presence of of marijuana plantations in Todelo city and  Balamban town.

The victim had a pending criminal case and was out on bail when he was killed.

Police are also eyeing a labor dispute as a possible motive  since Embranilag was connected with a labor union in Carmen Copper Corp./CORRESPONDENT CHITO O. ARAGON
