BOTH Don Bosco and Cebu International School (CIS) will advance to the semifinals in the Boys 17 category of the 15th Aboitiz Football Cup after playing to a 1-all draw in their final elimination match yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City.
By settling for a draw, both teams successfully eliminated Abellana National School (ANS), which would have finished as the second best team in the category.
All three teams had six points and the winner between the Don Bosco-CIS match would have advanced with nine points since wins were equivalent to three points. ANS would have taken the final spot if that happened as it has a better goal difference of 27 points over both teams.
But with the draw, Don Bosco and CIS finished with the same output while ANS was booted out. Don Bosco and CIS meet again in the semifinal round for a chance at the title.
The second match in the Boys 17, which was already non-bearing, saw University of San Carlos winning against Springdale, 2-0.
In the Players 8, advancing to the semifinal round are Bright Academy-A, Lahug-B, Don Bosco-3 and Don Bosco-4.
Bright Academy-A not only handed Bright Minds in Action Learning Village (BMALV) its first loss but also cost them a chance at the title with a 2-0 blanking.
Lahug-B, on the other hand, clinched a semifinals ticket with a 7-1 routing of Hijas de Jesus.
Francis Keith Mawe scored a hattrick for Lahug-B while Francis Jay Vercide chipped in two. The rest of the goals were scored by Francis Raiven Palag and Lawrence Aumentado.
Hijas de Jesus’ lone goal was scored by Lance Mangio. The Don Bosco teams completed the top four by blanking their respective opponents.
Don Bosco-3 inflicted a 3-0 thrashing of Ateneo de Cebu while Don Bosco-4 lambasted USC-BED, 4-0.
In the Players 10, arranging semifinal dates are Canduman versus AdC-B and Don Bosco-1 against Giuseppe.
In their last group stage matches, Giuseppe demolished Subangdaku FC, 8-2, while AdC-B benefited from the no show of Center for International Education (CIE)-A, 2-0.
Winning the rest of the matches yesterday were Don Bosco-1 with a 5-2 outsmarting of DB Razkals in the Boys 12, and Don Bosco-2 with a 17-0 annihilation of AdC-B in the Boys 14.
Little Azkals’ Moiselle Angelo Alforque scored six of Don Bosco-2’s 17 goals. The rest were contributed by Agustin Roa with four, Vincent Loutis and Dennis Cabilin with two each and chipping in one apiece were Thomas Glenn Ramos, Kenry Balobo and Angelo Ouano. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON
