Fire hits urban poor village in Cebu City

CEBU CITY–At least 30 houses were razed in a fire that hit an urban poor village in Sitio (subvillage) Sambag, Barangay (village) Guadalupe, this city past 2 p.m. Friday.

The number of affected families had yet to be determined but Guadalupe Barangay Captain Michael Gacasan said at least two families usually lived in one house.

Inspector Jose Laurito, acting fire marshal of the Cebu City Fire Department, said the fire of still unknown origin broke out at 2:25 p.m. from the home of Josebel Rojas and quickly spread to neighboring houses which were made of light materials.

Laurito said they had called for a general alarm because the area was located 300 meters from the access road. Firefighters had to connect their hoses to reach the fire scene, which was accessible only through a foot path.

It was put under control in less than 30 minutes.
