The first Filipino world flyweight boxing champion, Pancho Villa, was born on Aug. 1, 1901. Named Francisco Guilledo, he fought 105 bouts with 73 wins—22 of these by knockout. He died at the age of 24 due to a condition called Ludwig’s angina, an infection of the throat cavity. In 1994, Villa was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.-Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
