MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino III wants a majority Senate which can support him push for enabling laws for the Bangsamoro entity, a Team PNoy spokesperson said Monday.

Marikina Representative Miro Quimbo said that the Philippines is the only remaining country in Asia with an active Muslim separatist group.

Quimbo said Aquino’s visit to Mindanao is not about the election, but to meet officers of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and speed up the peace process.

The peace and order situation in Mindanao has been a long time problem, according to Quimbo.

“We need a Senate that will understand this difficult issue…,” he said adding that the President will need legislators who would support his peace vision in Mindanao.

The administration’s target, he said, is to finish the implementation of the peace pact before the President’s term ends and then they will proceed with inking a peace pact with the NDF.
