THE Talisay City Council will ask Mayor Socrates Fernandez to order the temporary stoppage of the road widening project in the Talisay-Toledo wharf access road.
City Councilor Danilo Caballero will sponsor a resolution to be presented in the regular session Tuesday asking Mayor Fernandez to order the work stoppage.
Caballero said the widening project caused massive landslides in barangays Camp 4, Jaclupan and Lagtang.
“Just recently, last Feb. 7, a woman died and two others were injured after they were struck by falling rocks while riding a motorcycle in barangay Lagtang where QM Builders is doing earth moving operations,” Caballero said.
Cabellero wants the contractor, QM Builders to stop the widening operations temporarily “until necessary precautionary measures for the safety of passers and residents in the vicinity are complied with.”
QM Builders is the official subcontractor of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the ongoing P52.6 million road widening project of the access road.
Last Sept. 2012, a landslide occurred in two sitios in Camp 4 forcing about 65 residents to transfer to safer ground.
“The Talisay city government must order QM Builders to stop operations and institute better safety measures that would allow residents of the four mountain barangays to cross the area safely,” he added.
“It should also remind the QM Builders of their obligation to provide assistance to those affected by the recent accident in barangay Lagtang,” he said.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau 7 in October last year said the road widening project made the slopes unstable and prone to land and rock slides.
The risk increases with sustained and heavy rainfall, the agency added.
