Imelda Papin: Disqualified
MANILA, Philippines—The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has canceled singer Imelda Papin’s congressional bid as representative of the lone district of San Jose del Monte City, Bulacan, for lack of residency.
In a 10-page decision, the Comelec Second Division ruled that Papin was ineligible to join the congressional derby after finding merit on the case filed by Arangkada San Joseño Political Party that questioned her residency in the city.
“[The] respondent’s certificate of candidacy (CoC) must be canceled for making false material representation relating to her residence and for claiming that she is eligible to run for elective office,” said the order signed by Election Commissioners Lucenito Tagle, Elias Yusoph and Grace Padaca.
Papin, popularly known for her songs “Isang Linggong Pag-Ibig” and “Bakit,” was elected vice governor of Camarines Sur in 1998. Her term ended in 2004. She ran for senator under the Bangon Pilipinas party in 2010 but lost.
