Araceli Baviera, UP law prof; 93
University of the Philippines–College of Law professor Araceli T. Baviera passed away on Friday at the age of 93.
Her remains lie at Funeraria Paz, Araneta Avenue in Quezon City. Her UP College of Law family will hold a necrological service in her honor on Feb. 4, Monday, at 7 p.m.
In 2009, Baviera, a member of the UP Law Class of 1954, received a lifetime achievement award from the UP Alumni Association for her 54-year service to the college.
In a feature story about her which came out that year, some of her former students and colleagues had only kind words for Baviera.
Sen. Franklin Drilon hailed her as “a professor’s professor.”
Then UP Law dean and now Supreme Court Justice Marvic Leonen described Baviera as “probably the only one who can talk about the intent in the drafting of the New Civil Code in the first person.”

And for Prof. Tony Laviña, “she’s very soft-spoken, but every word is a grain of wisdom.”
