LAPU–LAPU City Mayor Paz Radaza has urged students to help her convince Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIAA) to pay their taxes to address the shortage of classrooms in the city.
Radaza made this appeal during the turn over of a school building in the Marigondon National High School built with funds from the city’s Special Education Fund (SEF) last Tuesday.
The MCIAA has been levied real estate tax by the city government. Last year this has ballooned to P1.5 billion.
According to the mayor, that a portion of the P1.5 billion real estate tax that MCIAA owes the city will automatically go to the special education fund (SEF).
Should the MCIAA which operates the 800-hectare airport, the city’s classroom problem would be solved.
“Our public school classrooms now have 60 students or more. With the implementation of the K + 12, the problem is even more pronounced,” Radaza said.
The city she said needs about 500 new classrooms.
“Reach out to them. You can do a letter brigade by writing letters to the officials of MCIAA or send them a petition,” Radaza told the students.
