MANILA, Philippines — Taking the administration’s challenge, Vice President Jejomar Binay on Thursday made it clear that the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) is the “new opposition.”

“Sinasabi na namin na (We’re declaring that) we are the new opposition,” Binay told reporters after attending the 5th Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption.

But unlike the traditional opposition, Binay said UNA will be supportive of President Benigno Aquino III’s undertakings and would help in the legislative agenda of the administration.

But this, he said, should not also prevent them from exposing the wrongdoings that the people deserve to know.

“We are a new kind of opposition as I said,” said the Vice President.

“Kasama sa diwa ng demokrasya yun e. Merong opposition, otherwise dictatorial ang mangyayari sa atin (It’s the essence of democracy. There should be an opposition otherwise dictatorship will reign),” he said.

Binay reiterated that he maintains  a good relationship with the President.

UNA is being headed by Binay, former President Joseph Estrada and Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile.
