NCR-West fends off CV belles in Shakey’s title match

NCR-West shattered the title hopes of the Southwestern University-manned Central Visayas as they defeated the latter in straight sets, 25-22, 26-24, 28-26, to repeat as champions in the  Shakey’s Girls Volleyball Tournament-of-Champions at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium yesterday.

The Hope Christian School-powered NCR proved too much to handle behind Desiree Cheng who had 13 hits and one block while Chester Ong added eight points to help their winning cause.

CV looked headed to winning the first set after leading, 16-10 but the NCR belles gained their bearings and fought back behind Cheng, Ong and Isabel Molde to draw first blood.

Cheng, NCR-West’s team captain, continued to do her thing in the second set, smashing in to break a 24-24 standoff and put them at set point, before Molde sealed it with a power shot.

Therese Ramas and Sheena Quino had nine points apiece to lead CV.

NCR-West and Central Visayas sealed a dream title duel after beating their respective opponents in the morning’s crossover semis.

NCR-West bounced back from a second set defeat to beat Western Visayas, 25-15, 21-25, 25-9, while CV survived a stubborn Southern Luzon squad, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20.  /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
