San Beda, Mapua beat foes

DRAWING another big game from guard Garvo Lanete, San Beda repulsed Letran, 77-62, yesterday to extend its unbeaten run to six in the 87th NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Three after his 32-point explosion against Emilio Aguinaldo College, the sweet-shooting guard from Zamboanga kept his torrid form, finishing with 21 points as the Lions continued their mastery of the Knights, whom they have now defeated 11 straight times since 2007.

San Beda improved to 6-0 (win-loss) while the Knights absorbed their second loss in six games but remained in solo third place.

Meanwhile, veteran guard Allan Mangahas towed the Mapua Cardinals to their second straight win as he hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer for a 73-70 victory over the Arellano University Chiefs in the first game.

Mangahas, who averages 15.4 points in his last five games, only had seven points after playing for only 14 minutes but defied the outstretched hands of Vergel Zulueta to score the winning trey. The Cardinals thus earned their second victory in six games for sixth place overall.

Prince Caperal and Adrian Celada had 17 points for Arellano but both were tightly guarded in the fourth quarter, with Caperal fouling out midway in the fourth. / Correspondent Jonas Panerio
