MANILA, Philippines—Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile’s famous line: “E yung kahoy..? (And what about the wood?)” has now become a running  joke  even to  Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s  family.

Cayetano said  Enrile’s comment during their heated debate  Wednesday over the  use of Senate funds, provided a  comic relief to his family, who  are still grieving over the loss  of  his father, the late Senator Rene Cayetano .

“Sa amin parang kahapon lang siya nawala. Iyon na lang ang ginagawa naming patawa.  ‘E ‘yong kahoy…,” he told reporters   on  Friday.

During a heated exchange on the floor Wednesday, Enrile  suddenly brought  up an alleged debt by the late senator to him amounting to P37 million and quizzed Cayetano how they paid for  their house.

And when  Cayetano said they paid  their house  through a bank loan,   Enrile said: “E yung mga kahoy… saan nanggaling? (And what about the wood… where they came from?)”

“I think it’s irrelevant and immaterial to the discussion. Pero medyo na shock at natawa din,”  Cayetano said.
