Lieutenant Colonel Lyndon Paniza of the Army’s 10th Infantry Division said soldiers from Army’s 28th Infantry Battalion were on two military vehicles led by Second Lieutenant Paypa when it was hit by a landmine planted by suspected communist rebels in Sitio Mainit, Calapagan village, Lupon, Davao Oriental at 12:20 a.m.
The fatality was identified as Private First Class Jhasam Diaz who died while being treated in hospital.
Meanwhile, the rest of the injured were being treated at Tagum Regional Hospital and Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital in Mati City.
“The Army troops were part of the security of troops rendering rehabilitations to typhoon Pablo affected areas. The NPAs again showed their barbarism and inhuman acts by disturbing our humanitarian assistance activities” Paniza said.
“This is a clear manifestation that the New People’s Army violates and does not respect the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and the International Humanitarian Law (Carhrihl), landmine is strictly prohibited in this agreement. The NPAs are very desperate and ignored the provisions of Carhrihl,” he added.
