CEBU CITY, Philippines–Two women were killed while 15 other passengers were wounded on Friday night when a passenger jeepney rammed into a parked dump truck in Barangay Magdugo, Toledo City, about 50 kilometers west of here.
One of the fatalities was identified as Mary Rose Bangkok of Don Andres Soriano (DAS) in Toledo, said Senior Police Officer 2 Lorenzo Mahilum, Toledo City police investigator.
The second fatality had yet to be identified, Mahilum added.
He said that based on their initial investigation, the passenger jeepney was heading to Barangay DAS from Barangay Poblacion in Toledo City past 7 p.m.
Upon reaching Magdugo, the jeepney suddenly rammed into the dump truck parked on the side of the road.
The dump truck, which was carrying sand and gravel, was heading for Cebu City, Mahilum said. But the driver parked his dump truck because he wanted to eat dinner.
Mahilum said the truck driver had turned on his vehicle’s hazard lights to warn other vehicles.
He said they did not yet have information on why the passenger jeepney rammed into the dump truck but they later brought both drivers to the police station to shed light on the accident.
Mahilum said the two women suffered head injuries and were declared dead on arrival at the Toledo District Hospital. The 15 wounded were also brought to the district hospital but were later transferred to the different hospitals.
