An inmate convicted for murder charges was found hanging by the neck in his cell at the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7) headquarters in Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City.
Police said Zacarias Ompad Esito, 50, was found suspended from the window grill of the cell’s toilet past 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Police said the man cut up his shorts, tied it together and used it to hang himself.
Police said Esito escaped from San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City but was captured last Wednesday in his hometown in Sagbayan, Bohol.
Esito was supposed to be transferred to Zamboanga next week.
Police said it was possible that Esito was bothered that he will be transferred to Zamboanga which drove him to commit suicide.
There were three inmates in the cell, according to investigators of the homicide section of the Cebu City Police Office.
Police said the incident was discovered when errand boy Rodillo Noble went to the detention cell to bring food to the inmates.
Paramedics from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (Eruf) tried to revive the victim but it was too late.
