2 killed, 2 injured as car slams into 22-wheeler truck in Batangas

MANILA, Philippines—Two people were killed and two others were injured when the car they were riding rammed a 22-wheeler truck on the Star Tollway in Batangas Tuesday evening, police said Wednesday.

Case investigator, Police Officer 2 Mario Motas, said the truck was traveling north on the tollway along Marval, Batangas around 9 p.m. when it developed a mechanical malfunction, prompting its driver, Angelito Kabado, to pull over on the center island.

However, Motas said the Mitsubishi Lancer (TKG 979) driven by Dennis Baril that was travelling towards the same direction may have not noticed that the truck was already slowing down, causing it to hit the rear of the truck.

“Baril and one of his three passengers, Ryndon Mulingtapang, were killed due to the impact while two others—Resty Hontiveros and Dexter Pagkaliwanagan—were rushed to hospital after sustaining injuries.

Hontiveros remains in critical condition in hospital, he said.

Meanwhile, a radio report said the car even went on fire due to the impact.

Kabado has been placed under police custody,  Motas said.
