MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police has ordered the recall of police security escorts assigned to local officials vying for a seat in the upcoming midterm elections, an official said Thursday.
PNP spokesman, Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr., said the move was among the security preparations for the May elections, citing the enforcement of the gun ban this coming Sunday.
But for those who would insist on having a bodyguard, Cerbo said a request can be made before the Commission on Elections which will be subject for approval.
“If [a candidate] feels he needs more than one security escort, he has to make a request, he should justify it, [and] we will study it,” Cerbo said.
Politicians, Cerbo said, can also get a protective agent from accredited security agencies, but will, likewise, be subject for Comelec’s approval.
“Protective agents . . . they will be properly trained and oriented to the proper conduct of protective security,” Cerbo said, but added that they also need to be in their proper uniforms.
Roughly 800 Police Security Protection Group personnel have been called to Camp Crame while they wait for their new assignment.
