TEGUCIGALPA—Honduran President Porfirio Lobo said Monday that a pre-Christmas party at the country’s embassy in Colombia that included prostitutes was a “sad incident.”
At the foreign minister’s request, Ambassador Carlos Rodriguez resigned Saturday after his bodyguard hosted a bash at the Bogota mission on December 20 with prostitutes and alcohol. The diplomat said he was not at the party.
In a news conference, Lobo described the scandal as a “sad incident at the Honduran embassy in Bogota.”
“It is regrettable because Carlos Rodriguez is a great man and a good citizen, and I very much regret what took place,” he said. “Regrettably what happened, happened, and logically Rodriguez was exposed.”
Rodriguez accepted blame for the party, though he said he was on vacation with his family and out of the country when it took place.
According to Honduran media reports, the ambassador’s bodyguard and close friend Jorge Mendoza had organized a holiday party at the embassy that turned into a booze-fuelled orgy with prostitutes.
Reports said the prostitutes stole embassy computers and cell phones, and defecated on the desks of the ambassador and the commercial attaché, after they were asked to leave without being paid.
