Money problems drive man to kill self

Pressure to produce money for his family drove a 35-year-old electrician to hang himself inside his home in Manila Sunday morning.

Manila police investigators said that Renato Luna, a resident of 856 Area A, Gate 3 of the Parola Compound in Tondo, had tried twice to kill himself before, both times preceded by a fight with his wife over their lack of money.

SPO1 Jonathan Bautista of the Manila Police District homicide section said that Luna’s body was found at 8 a.m. by his 30-year-old wife, Catherine. The victim was hanging from the ceiling with a nylon cord tied around his neck. The case investigator told the Inquirer that several hours before the discovery, Luna and his wife had argued over his salary which she had been expecting him to give her so she could allocate it for the needs for their three children.

The victim, however, claimed that he had yet to get paid, leading to a more heated discussion which ended with Luna drinking beer and locking himself inside their room as his wife did the laundry.

When she went to their room several hours later, she found him dead.- Jeannette I. Andrade
