MANILA, Philippines—Pressure to produce money for his family drove a 35-year-old electrician to hang himself Sunday morning inside his home in Manila.
Manila police investigators said that Renato Luna, of 856 Area A, Gate 3, Parola Compound, Tondo, had two previous suicide attempts several months back before he succeeded Sunday.
Senior Police Officer 1 Jonathan Bautista, of the Manila Police District (MPD) homicide section, said that Luna’s body was found around 8 a.m. Sunday by his 30-year-old wife Catherine.
According to Bautista, when discovered the suicide was hanging from the ceiling with a nylon cord looped around his neck.
The case investigator told the Inquirer that several hours before the discovery, at around 2 a.m., Luna and his wife had a spat over his salary, which she had been expecting him to hand over so she could budget the cash for their three children.
“When she (wife) asked for his salary and he could not produce the money, claiming he had not yet gotten paid, they argued,” Bautista said.
The argument, the case investigator said, got worse when Luna asked his wife if she trusted him. The electrician drank beer after their argument and locked himself inside their bedroom leaving behind his wife who was busy washing their clothes.
Several hours later when Catherine proceeded to their bedroom to check on her husband, she found him dead.
Bautista told the Inquirer that according to the suicide’s relatives Luna had previously attempted to kill himself twice, each after figuring in a marital spat over finances.
