Fernandez to be named next coach for San Beda

TO nobody’s surprise, the San Beda Red Lions have a new head coach to guide them in the upcoming NCAA season as Boyet Fernandez was tapped to replace Ronnie Magsanoc, who stepped down from his position late last year after leading the squad to their second “three-peat” in seven years.

According to a report that was posted on Spin.ph, the Red Lions are set to name Fernandez as their new head coach, following the recommendation of top supporter, Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP). Fernandez is also the head coach of MVP’s squad in the PBA D-League, the multi-titled NLEX Road Warriors, which has won all three titles in that league.

Aside from the D-League, Fernandez also boasts of a title in the big leagues as he steered the now-disbanded Sta. Lucia Realtors to the crown in the PBA Philippine Cup way back in the 2007-2008 season.

However, success has eluded the former pro guard in the collegiate ranks as his first stint as head coach for the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the UAAP, ended with him not getting a win in 12 tries.

Fernandez though, has a loaded arsenal to work with in the Red Lions’ den which is now being anchored by sophomore guard, Baser “The Hammer” Amer, who he coaches in the Road Warriors, and center, Ola Adeogun.  /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
