Road accidents claim two persons lives

Two persons were while three others were injured in separate road accidents in southern Cebu over the weekend.

A Suzuki Minvan driven by a police officer accidentally hit a motorcycle while traversing the national highway of barangay Bahay, Sibonga, killing a pregnant woman and injuring three others last Sunday evening.

Glemnar Laude, who was nine months pregnant, 25, was rushed to the hospital but she didn’t reach the hospital alive.

Her 4-year-old daughter, Erika, and the motorcycle driver Arnel Sonsona, 23, suffered injuries in their bodies and were transferred from the Deiparine Medical Clinic in Sibonga to the Vicente Sotto Medical Center for further treatment.

Helen Rosales, 39, who was aboard the minivan also suffered injuries in her forehead and mouth.

PO2 Jephthah Jumawan, a police officer assigned with the Cebu Provincial Police Office who was the driver of the minivan, surrendered to Sibonga police after the incident.

Jumawan’s other five passengers were not injured in the accident. They are Jessa Mae Milar, 23; Ermie Aparici, 15; Ernamie Milar, 19; Ruel Euge Rosales, 9, and Anselmo Caingles, 22, all residents of Dalaguete, southern Cebu.

Investigation showed that the minivan was headed to Cebu City at past 10 p.m. last Sunday when the motorcycle driven by Sonsona suddenly made a left turn from an intersecting road to the minivan’s lane.

Jumawan tried to put on the brakes but he hit the motorcycle throwing Sonsona and his two backriders, Laude and her daughter, to the pavement.

Residents rushed the road accident victims to the hospital.

Jumawan was detained at the Sibonga Police Station pending the filing of multiple homicide and physical injuries charges.

Last Saturday in Samboan town, another road accident claimed the live of a tricycle driver in barangay Sebastian.

Macario Catipay died after his tricycle was rammed by another tricycle as he negotiated an intersection in the barangay.

Edward George Anderson, the tricycle driver involved in the crash, was detained at the Samboan police station pending the filing of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide charges.

Investigation showed that Catipay was crossing the intersection at past 5 a.m. when the tricycle driven by Anderson slammed into Catipay’s tricycle.
