MANILA, Philippines—Vice President Jejomar Binay is hoping for a better year ahead as 2012 bids goodbye.

In a press statement on Monday, Binay also urged Filipinos to stay upbeat despite the calamities that struck the country, most recently typhoon “Pablo,” which claimed more than 1,000 lives in Mindanao.

“The year 2012 showed how we Filipinos continue to stand firm and remain hopeful in spite of the tragedies we face and humble in the face of victories,” Binay said.

Binay added: “I pray that the coming year will fill us with a renewed sense of joy, guided by the grace of God as we continue our journey towards a more prosperous Philippines.

“Together, we can build the nation of our dreams—a nation where our children and the coming generations can live in peace, prosperity and dignity.

“Isang Maunlad, Maginhawa at Magandang Buhay sa Bagong Taon para sa ating lahat!”
