Mandaue City narrowly missed out on a grandslam of titles but will be more than content with their haul as their women’s and kids’ teams repeated as champions during the final games in the 2012 Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup yesterday at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City.
The volleybelles of Mandaue completed a rare three-peat as they annexed their third straight crown in the women’s division after beating the resilient Catmon in four sets.
Their kids’ team, on the other hand, cruised to the title by beating Moalboal in straight sets, 25-13, 26-24.
Catmon actually drew first blood in the finals as they won the first set, 25-20. But Mandaue simply had too much firepower for their opponents to handle with Danika Gendrauli, Jusabelle Brillo, Genie Sabas and Kennete Garces all conspiring with one another to run out the next three sets, 25-19, 25-13, 25-21.
Mandaue had a sure shot at sweeping the rest of the titles in the tournament but Liloan put a huge wrench into their plans by winning the championship match in the men’s division, 25-19, 25-21, 25-16.
Liloan was a juggernaut in this competition as they went all the way without suffering a single loss behind the skills of Jonrey Sasing, Jelan Visoc, Clifford Café and James Rivera.
The champions in the men’s and women’s divisions bagged P100,000 each while the titlist in the kids class got P30,000.
