Six teams moved closer towards making their holiday season even merrier as they advanced to the championship games of the 2012 Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup with semifinals wins yesterday at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City.
Three of the six teams in the finals are being represented by Mandaue City.
In the kids class, the mighty youngsters of Mandaue City pulled themselves a win away from repeating as champions as they barged into the finals with a gusty three-set win over archrivals Catmon.
Standing in the way of Mandaue for the title this year is Moalboal, which claimed the other berth in the finals with an easy 25-13, 25-15 win over Compostela.
In the women’s class, Mandaue and Catmon forged a finals duel after trouncing separate foes in the final four.
The defending champion Mandaue beat Liloan, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20, while Catmon edged Talisay, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21.
Over in the premier men’s division, a new champion will be crowned as the erstwhile back-to-back champions, Talisay City, were booted out of the competition after failing to get past the elimination round. Talisay ended the eliminations with an even 2-2 (win-loss) mark after losses to Liloan and Asturias.
With that development, Liloan took advantage as they grabbed a ticket to the finals with a straight sets win over Carcar. Liloan remained unbeaten in this tournament after four straight wins in the elims after they disposed of Carcar, 25-17, 25-17, 25-15.
Mandaue City on the other hand, will be facing off against Liloan as they rose from a first set defeat to down Asturias, 19-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-15.
The championship games will be played today at the same venue.
