Asturias stuns Talisay in Unity Cup volley

THE upset axe was swung heavily down upon the necks of Talisay City as Asturias registered its second win of the tournament in style, winning over the two-time defending champions in straight sets in the ongoing elimination round of the 2012 Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup late Wednesday night at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City.

Asturias simply had Talisay’s number as it won in spite of the repeated fightbacks by Talisay, 25-21, 25-23.

The win tied Asturias with its victims in the standings as both now own identical 2-1 (win-loss) records in group A.

Bantayan got its first win of the tournament with a 25-12, 25-18 win over Ronda.

Liloan took advantage of Talisay’s mishap to seize the solo lead in the same group after it defeated Bantayan, 25-18, 25-18, for its third win in as many games.

In group B, Carcar kept its winning roll going as it grabbed its third straight win with a 25-15, 25-17 shellacking of Toledo.

Mandaue, meanwhile, kept abreast of the leaders with a 25-21, 25-16 victory over Toledo for second place with a 2-0 card. Sta. Fe also beat Moalboal in a thrilling three-setter, 27-25, 20-25, 25-22.

The semifinals will be played today with the kids category to be played in the early morning and the men and women’s games to be competed in in the late afternoon.  /Correspondent   Jonas Panerio
