MANILA, Philippines—An unscheduled power interruption caused the breakdown of MRT 3 trains close to midnight on Thursday, an official of Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) explained to 990 AM Radyo Inquirer early Friday morning.

The sudden power breakdown earned the ire of thousands of train commuters.

Spokesperson for LRTA, lawyer Hernando Cabrera, in an interview with co-anchors Willy Matawaran and Louie Garcia of “In Desk Corner” said at around 10:20 pm Thursday, there was a power failure in Meralco Balintawak, which supplies electricity to MRT 3 operations.

“Though electricity was restored after 10 minutes, it doesn’t follow that the trains can run immediately. There’s a series of systems check-up. It’s not like a jeepney that can re-start at once,” Cabrera said.

Though many commuters decided to alight and took the bus instead, the MRT 3 trains ran again after a few minutes, Cabrera added.

Other matters were raised by Matawaran and Garcia, mostly regarding order and discipline in the ticket lines and unruly commuters.
