SMART Communications Inc. (Smart), together with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), the Hoskyn Fisherfolks Association Inc., Philippine Coast Guard and local government officials, replanted around 1,000 mangrove propagules last month in Guimaras.
The site in barangay Hoskin in Guimaras is one of the sites adopted by Smart for mangrove enrichment to sustain biodiversity in the area.
PENRO took charge of the propagules and hauling, while the Hoskyn fisherfolks and the barangay officials did the cleaning and preparation of the site.
A total of 70 volunteers from Smart and Sun’s technology services Iloilo division and its partners participated in the mangrove enrichment activity.
After the planting activity, Smart and its partners turned over the marker of the mangrove site to the barangay officials, who have committed to allocate a budget to fence in the site to secure the propagules.
