The Philippine Islands Anti-Tuberculosis Society, the predecessor of the nonstock, nonprofit charitable institution Philippine Tuberculosis Society Inc. (PTSI), was established 101 years ago today, July 29, to prevent, control and treat tuberculosis the country. On Dec. 14, 1918, the PTSI opened the Quezon Institute (formerly Santol Sanatorium) for tubercular patients. As of 2009, the country ranks ninth on the list of 22 high-burden tuberculosis countries in the world, according to the World Health Organization’s Global TB Report.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
