Ormoc City opens 1.8-hectare sanitary landfill

ORMOC CITY—This city opened a 1.8-hectare sanitary landfill on Wednesday, only the second such facility to be put up in Eastern Visayas.

The Ormoc City sanitary landfill, which is located in Barangay Green Valley, 18 kilometers from the city proper, was built at a cost of P55.5 million.

With the opening of the city’s sanitary landfill, the open dump in Barangay Macabug that has been used since 1960 would be closed, said Ormoc City Mayor Eric Codilla.

The city, with its 177,524 residents, produces 38 tons of garbage daily.

The sanitary landfill was built in January 2010 and was completed just last month.

“There is no higher calling than protecting our environment,” said the mayor.

The German Development Cooperation (GTZ) provided the technical assistance for the sanitary landfill project.

Wolfgang Moller, country deputy representative of the GTZ, said he hoped that the new facility would serve as an inspiration to the people of Ormoc in protecting their environment.
