Carolinians win debate tournament

THE Carolinian Debating Society was declared the grand champion in the 1st Cebu Inter-Varsities debate tournament hosted by the University of the Philippines Cebu College from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2.

The “Team USC-illimen” bested 36 other contestants in the entire tournament.

The team was composed of Ralph Gonzales, BSBA Marketing Management I, University of San Carlos; Alvin Clyde Gregorio, Bachelor of Laws II, USC; and Noel Valente, Silliman University.

They won against UP Cebu with a 5-2 split on the motion “That the gay rights movement should abandon the institution of marriage.”

Gregorio and Valente were awarded as the second best speakers of the tournament, while Gonzales as the final round’s best speaker.

Gonzales, an experienced debater, and Gea Ecoy, Supreme Student Council councilor and an experienced public speaker, created the Carolinian Debating Society just this year to encourage more Carolinians to develop their interest and talents in debate.

They then joined the 1st Cebu Inter-Varsities debate tournament for their first outing and won.

The USC Team B composed of Ivan Dulce (BS Psychology I), RJ Diana (BS Accountancy II) and Java Sison (PAREF Springdale) made it to the semi finals of the tournament after beating Cebu Institute of Technology-University in the Octofinals and Philippine Science High School in the quarter finals.

Leslie San Pedro, (BS HRM-Australian Qualifications Framework), was awarded the 5th best adjudicator of the tournament, while Nicole Ann Ponce (BS Political Science II) was a breaking adjudicator.

Both adjudicators bested 34 other participants.
