Arce hopes to do a Marquez against Donaire
THE worldwide shock and disbelief generated by the sixth round knockout victory of Juan Manuel Marquez against Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has added more motivation for Marquez’s compatriot Jorge “El Travieso” Arce in his bid to dethrone WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire this Sunday Dec. 16 (Philippine Time) at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
The 33-year-old Arce (61W-6L-2D, 46 KOs), who hails from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, has won world titles in four different weight divisions. According to the Mexican news website, ESTO (www.oem.com.mx), Marquez’s strength and conditioning coach, Dr.Angel Heredia, has also spent five weeks with Arce in their bid to topple another Filipino pound-for-pound star.
The article posted on ESTO by Ernesto Castellanos also stated that another doctor, Edgardo Lucero, was commissioned to complete the work with Arce.
“We hope that the victory next Saturday will silence many mouths,” Dr. Lucero said.
Arce has beaten Filipino boxers Fernando Lumacad, Juanito Rubillar and former WBA minimumweight champion Joma Gamboa.
The 30-year-old Donaire (30W-1L, 19 KOs) is on a hot streak since 2010 where in his last seven fights he scored wins against boxers who have worn world title belts including Hernan ‘Tyson’ Marquez, Volodymyr Sydorenko, Fernando Montiel, Omar Narvaez, Wilfredo Vasquez Jr., Jeffrey Mathebula and Toshiaki Nishioka.
