Ateneo de Cebu batch ‘87 inaugurates GK village

The Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu (SHS AdC) batch 1987 has come full circle with their upcoming 25th homecoming celebration.

This year, the batch provides new beginnings to families in need — one house at a time, built in the spirit of solidarity and compassion.

“This is the first time that SHS-AdC will be participating with a non-government organization for the homecoming celebration,” said John Dytian, batch 1987 chairman.

“We want to provide others with new beginnings, just as we were when we graduated,” he added.

As the batch celebrates its 25th year, it partnered with the Gawad Kalinga to build a village for indigent families.

Last Dec. 8, SHS-AdC president Fr. Manny Uy, SJ, inaugurated the Sacred Heart School Ateneo de Cebu Gawad Kalinga Village in barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City, which currently has 13 houses.

Fr. Uy also blessed the multi-purpose hall, which was built with the support of Alumni Association president Edmund Liu and assistance of Bigfood Trade and Commodities, Pro Builders Inc., Cebu Home and Builders Centre, Cebu Oversea Hardware, JLR Construction and Aggregates Inc., Jim Enterprises, Santiago Shipyard and Shipbuilding Corp, Vic Enterprises and Stronghold Glass and Aluminum.

Aside from the inauguration, the batch also conducted a medical mission spearheaded by batch ’87 doctors Dr. Andrei Yu, Dr. Jonathan del Prado, Dr. Gerardo Gasendo and Dr. Wilson de la Calzada.

More than 300 patients in Maguikay received free medicines, vitamins and reading glasses as well as minor surgeries.

The village can accommodate 30 houses. The batch is asking individuals, businesses and organizations for help to complete the village and build new houses for the remaining 17 families.
