Typhoon toll in New Bataan, ComVal rises to 90

MANILA, Philippines – The death toll from flashfloods caused by typhoon “Pablo” (international name Bopha) Tuesday in New Bataan in Compostela Valley continued to rise as more bodies were retrieved Tuesday while hundreds remained missing, the military said.

As of latest, there were 90 people killed from the floods that swept the municipality and an Army outpost, 58 of which were already identified, Lieutenant Colonel Lyndon Paniza of the Army’s 10th Infantry Division said in a statement Thursday.

Of the fatalities, five were soldiers from the Army’s 66th Infantry Battalion.

There were 341 persons still unaccounted for, six of which were soldiers.

Meanwhile, 147 were injured, including 17 soldiers.

The whole province of Compostela Valley has recorded deaths of 199 and 351 still missing, said Paniza.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council’s latest official death toll nationwide was still at 327.
