QC fire kills 3 more kids; week’s toll reaches 6

Even veteran firemen found it disturbing.

Three children were killed in a fire that razed at least 50 houses Friday night in Quezon City, bringing to six the number of minors burned to death in Metro Manila this week.

City fire marshal Senior Supt. Bobby Baruelo found the blaze that hit Barangay Holy Spirit “very alarming” as it immediately followed similar tragedies in Las Piñas City and Manila that left three more children dead on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

The bodies of Daniela Mercado, 7, and brother Danzell, 4, were recovered before dawn Saturday from the burnt ruins of their slum neighborhood near the Sandiganbayan.

A third fatality—a 9-year-old boy identified only as CJ—was found around 7 a.m. Julie M. Aurelio
